An Introduction

The Indian Forest Service (IFS) was re-constituted as the third All Indian Service in 1966. Recruitment is made through an All-India Open Competition (IFS Examination) on yearly basis conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), New Delhi. It is open to Science Graduates only. The candidates have to qualify in a written test, personality test, rigorous medical test and an endurance test.

The Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF) is the "Cadre Controlling Authority" for IFS consisting of 21 State Cadres including three Joint Cadres, namely the Assam-Meghalaya, Manipur-Tripura and Arunanchal Pradesh- Goa-Mizoram, Union Territories (AGMUT).

The work relating to direct recruitment to the IFS induction through promotion from the State Forest Service (SFS) Cadres, Cadre reviews for revising the composition and strength of IFS of various cadres, allocation of IFS Probationers to various state cadres, determination of year of allotment of Promoted Officer and inter-se seniority, selection/appointment of IFS personnel against central deputation reserve forestry posts, central deputation secretariat positions under central reserve forestry bodies bodies including ICFRE (Dehradun), IIFM (Bhopal), WII (Dehradun) and foreign assignment of IFS personnel within the country and abroad, finalization of service matters like post-recruitment, inter-cadre transfers and deputation's management of AGMUT Cadre including promotions/transfers and postings and other related service matters are dealt with by the MoEF.

Profiles of new entrants in IFS shows that most of them are highly qualified persons mostly with Post-Graduate Degrees in Science, Engineering, Agiculture and Forestry disciplines and some are Ph.Ds. After final selection in the service, the IFS Probationers undergo a total of three years' probation distributed over multiple phases.
